While the idea of retiring in Southern California may sound enticing, it’s not generally top of anyone’s list of affordable places to live. However, Boomers are discovering that there are quite a few places that still offer all the benefits of the Southern California lifestyle without the prohibitive price tag.

Riverside is one such place.  Just 60 miles east of Los Angeles, Riverside has a desirable combination of city life, small town community, and a vibrant cultural life. Add to that the Southern California climate, affordability, and access to services and you can see why it’s the perfect place for retirees to enjoy their golden years.

Living in Riverside

It’s often said that retiring in a University town has many benefits.  Riverside is no exception.

There’s always something interesting happening on the University of California Riverside campus. You can attend free movies in the park and if you’re interested in art and culture, there are all kinds of events and museums to fill your days.

Visit the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art, Culture and Industry, the California Citrus State Museum, or for the more mechanically-minded, try the International Automotive Museum.

If gardens and nature are more to your liking, the UC-Riverside Botanic Gardens will delight your senses and keep you busy all year round.  It’s open to the public and admission is free.

There are special events, educational opportunities, and if you’re looking for something to keep you busy they’re always looking for volunteers.  The gardens are located in the foothills of the Box Springs Mountains on the east side of the campus and cover 40 acres. You can wander over four miles of scenic trails or just relax on a bench and enjoy the natural beauty around you.

Services in Riverside

Top of most Boomers priorities in a place to retire is access to medical services. Riverside has three excellent hospitals and many assisted living communities.

The well-established bus system and the Metrolink local commuter train that services the Riverside and San Bernardino areas make it easy to get around. If you’re planning to go out of town frequently, the Ontario airport is just 15 miles away and there is a shuttle bus service to Los Angeles International Airport.

So don’t cross Southern California off your retirement list.  It is possible to buy your perfect home at an affordable price and spend your retirement enjoying the California lifestyle.
